AWS ( Amazon Web Services ) dominates the Cloud industry with the breadth of services ( over 100+ ) and is way ahead Google Cloud and Microsoft’s Azure.
If an AWS Summit is in your town and go ahead, it is well worth it and free. The keynotes , sessions are really enriching. It’s great way to network with the local players. The AWS partners range from cloud consulting to service to tooling providers. You can expose your cloud problems to an AWS Solutions Architect.
I went to the keynotes just for Adrian Cockcroft, ex-Netflix , now VP Cloud at AWS .
Alexa
The sessions were enriching especially the “Alexa design” by Benoit Nachawati. The arrival of Dynamic Entities helps to personalize Alexa Skill experiences by adapting the interaction model at runtime without edits, builds, or re-certification. Basically imagine that Alexa can only accept a finite Set of words , say a drink : coffee, latte, tea … in the utterance. The user says “water” , and it is not a defined value, your Alexa Skill can remember this word for later use.
Startup Central
An area was dedicated to startups . I went to see the architecture of 8 finalist startups. Serverless was used by all of the finalists, maybe a condition from AWS to promote this technology.
I started to experiment with static website generators. Why use one instead of sticking to a CMS such as WordPress ?
Static sites response time are faster because there is no database connection. But static websites cannot persist any data, meaning that no one can post comments.
In short, static site features are more limited than WordPress. If you only need a single page application or few pages, go static.
I created a simple website https://chenon.app with Hugo for my portfolio and freelance activities.
staticgen.com is great start which platforms to choose.
After spending 4 days – 3 nights from August 16 to 19 2013 in Munich. On Monday, I got a job interview, the dates were flexible so I arranged a longer stay to enjoy Munich.
Like always I book on airbnb because it’s cheaper than hotels and more fun.
I arrived on Friday at 17:20 , and luckily the lady hoster was at the airport on Friday. People associates Munich with Octoberfest, massive beer stein but not surf.
1 Surf culture
She told me to wait at Surf & Style , a surfing contest just outside the airport . A friend of her drove us to the apartment .
Munich has a surfing culture , strange for a city far from the sea. Sometimes, I see some people with a surf in the subway.
2 Englischer Garten
The next day, at viktualienmarkt I tasted the weisswurst literally white sausage ( it is eaten before noon ). I like it because of the mustard honey sauce.
I visited the Englischer Garten ( which is bigger than New York’s Central Park ). There is a Chinese tower in the center of the park surrounded by a beer garden. And there is a surfing spot on the river south end.
3 Bavaria
Then on Sunday, I had tour on a segway . I took the chance to do a segway tour for the first time in my life. The tour covered what I did the day before plus some landmarks and the history. Here is what I learnt :
BMW ( Bayerische Motoren Werke AG ) , the auto maker, has its headquarter in Munich. The blue and white logo is the flag color of Bavaria. Buying at BMW Museum and import can be cheaper depe nding on your country.
at Odeonsplatz , Nike posted in front of Theatinerkirche a giant poster of Franck Ribery, Bayern Munich player, wearing the King robe . The guide said : “It’s funny, he’s French muslim in a Catholic state. He drinks beer alcohol free.”
since WW2 , most buildings were destroyed. In Munich the buildings were rebuilt as the same traditional ones unlike the rest of Germany.
To finish the day, I walked past Theresienwiese ( the place of Octoberfest ) . Actually Theresienwiese means the Therese ‘s wedding . During the wedding, the place was used for horse racing . Now it hosts the famous Octoberfest . The 2 week long feast generates around 1 billion euros every year.
Munich has great standard of living . Lots of people speak English . The subway is cleaner than Paris.
Bavaria ( the region ) has the most holidays in Germany and the most successful economically. Low unemployment , some people even have two jobs.
Today I’m turning 29 years . Time to reflect on year 2012 . It was a year with lots of change :
– I created a one man company around August : provide consulting services. Really different from being an employee. I learnt much more in the short time than being a permie. I think I’ll focus more on products rather than building apps for customers. Clearly build apps for client is regular pay , few developers make a living selling their own apps.
– travels : I was lucky to travel to London , China (Shanghai, Shenzhen ), Hong Kong, Macau, Geneva …
Some resolutions : I will learn more about business side. My “Expert Comptable” (Chartered Accountant) explained legal status, tax declarations and co clearly.
In February , I’m going to register for a training to create a company, raise funding….
Yeah I found it : yesterday I was looking for how to add tab on the upper page ( or tabbar) like on this blog
Not sidebar, there is a plenty of non sense plugin, javascript and so which add your page on your side bar. The solution : in wp-admin Pages> add a new page. Of course depending on the theme you use, the theme must display it. Everything is in the theme.
I was nearly switching to Joomla to own the tabbar. Now just one thing I still don’t know how to a post to under a certain page
If you have come to this page, maybe you’re interested in blogging, maybe you’re already using blogger or movable type. I used to have another account on WordPress until I could not log into when I was in China thanks to the Great Fire Wall. Then I switched to blogger which is convenient if you have a gmail address. But I was quite unsatisfied for various reasons :
Search Engine Optimization
WordPress has more advanced features. When it comes to SEO, meaning for search engine wordpress blogs come first despite the fact blogger is owned by Google. Believe it or not, here is a proof
wordpress.com | wordpress.org
Why not use a self-hosted from wordpress.org ? Some countries like China, Dubai block any access WordPress, Flickr , Youtube … So the best way to get around is self host or use a proxy. It’s affordable for about 4USD a month of hosting with domain name. Why do that when it’s available for free on wordpress.com PLUS you benefit the network of WP.com . Consider now you’ve blogged for some time and want to self host. Of course you don’t want to lose your posts and comments. It’s possible to transfer from wordpress.com, blogger, movable type to wordpress.org . So no worry
User friendly
Matt Mullenweg is cool and he’s just one day older than me 🙂 . Actually I met him at WordCamp Paris, he is very candid, open and passionnate about what he does. I advise you watch any of his videos on youtube, he’s a visionnary at his age. Coming from a non tech background, Matt’s visions of WordPress is very easy to use “You have to know WordPress is the last thing on Earth, bloggers have mind. It’s a disrespect towards the person if he loses time using it”. He openly described the software behind WordPress as clunky, there would be a lots of work to move to MVC. But hell, it’s better than TypePad and Blogspot. As users, we do not need to think about the tools when blogging we focus on contents. That’s the important part.
I notice Google is losing edges. Flickr owned by Yahoo is cooler than piscasaweb. Since Youtube was bought, it’s less innovative. Blogspot was at the spot when Google bought it.
